Co-facilitate English Club for Ukrainian High School Students

Job Description
Lyceums and gymnasiums in Ukraine work to support their students' educational growth and development by specializing in different fields of study including studying English. Students will often study English along with other foreign languages throughout the curriculum. School administrators believe that engaging with the Virtual Service Pilot is an opportunity to gain exposure with American English in a natural environment and improve language skills through collaboration with a Virtual Service Pilot Participant (VSPP). Regular practice in a supportive environment will also boost confidence and global mindset among the learners.

Three secondary schools are requesting three VSPPs to meet with and support a group of 20 self-reliant, motivated and change-oriented high school students years old) at each school once a week for a one-hour English Club session. Club participants are eager to be immersed in interesting collaboration activities including topics such as art, social media, travelling, natural wonders, holidays and traditions, sport, education, and others. VSPPs will be assigned to their school during orientation when they meet with their respective secondary school counterpart.

The organizations have previously collaborated with Peace Corps. They understand that the role of a VSPP is very different than a two-year Volunteer.

Desired Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in education, secondary education, or related field and/or relevant certification: TEFL, TESOL, Cambridge, or similar

Experience: Virtual engagement and communication

Required Skills
Education: Bachelor's degree in any field

Experience: 1 year TEFL/TESOL to university students in the U.S. or abroad

Intercultural skills and motivation: Flexible, strong cross-cultural agility, high tolerance for ambiguity, able to work independently, resourceful, creative, and genuinely motivated and capable to serve virtually

Host Country Partner's Mission and Goals
Partner schools aim to broaden students' linguistic and cultural horizons through real time interaction with Virtual Service Pilot Participants. Their mission centers on fostering authentic communication, enhancing fluency and confidence by connecting learners with diverse American teachers.

By working with a VSPP students will immerse themselves in the English Language environment and get opportunities to enrich classroom experiences, promote inclusivity, and expand cultural perspectives. Students will enhance their cross-cultural competence and communication skills through guided discussions on cross-cultural themes, providing them with valuable practice in English speaking. The three secondary schools and their respective Host Country counterpart English teachers are listed below:
1. Dnipro Lyceum #22, Dnipropetrovsk Region; Olena Shepel, Teacher of English
2. Berdychiv Gymnasium #2, Zhytomyr Region; Nadiya Minakova, Teacher of English
3. Slobidskyy Lyceum #1, Cherkasy Region; Svitlana Kuzkina

Virtual Service Engagement and Tasks
The VSPPs will engage in the following tasks, in collaboration with their host country partners:

• Collaborate with the counterpart to assess English skill level of students and to establish expectations for session planning and procedures

• Co-design session plans for English club meetings with clear policy, procedures, resources, and outcomes

• Co-develop learning resources to facilitate exposure to the U.S. culture (sport, youth life, cuisine, healthcare, mass media, social network sites, art and culture, education, etc.)

• Co-teach one 1-hour English-Speaking Club session per week for a group of 20 students after 4:00 p.m. Kyiv time (Eastern Standard Time plus 8 hours)

• Co-analyze the results of conducted sessions and identify learning objectives and appropriate communicative activities

Online collaboration will generally occur between 4:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Ukraine time. Specific times will be determined during orientation. VSPPs are expected to engage on the tasks listed above for an estimated 5-15 hours per week. This engagement is estimated to be 5 hours per week.

The Host Country Counterpart will have access to Zoom, WhatsApp, and Teams for regular communication and collaboration.

Per the Child Protection Code of Conduct, when engaging online with minors (0-18), two adults must be present.
