Co-facilitate University English Club to Improve Communication Skills

Job Description
An English department at a university in Ukraine provides students with a comprehensive and high-quality education in English. They strive to develop well-rounded professionals who possess strong language skills, intercultural competence, and global perspectives.

This university seeks the support of a Virtual Service Pilot Participant (VSPP) to engage 20 students in an English club to enhance linguistic and intercultural learning and discussions. The VSPP will co-teach one group of students with their counterpart and focus on themes of American values, democracy, cultural diversity, globalization, and intercultural communication. Online sessions will take place once per week and will be co-facilitated with the Ukrainian counterpart. The sessions will enhance students' linguistic abilities, cultural awareness, and motivation, while also providing professional development opportunities for a Ukrainian counterpart.

The organization has previously collaborated with the Peace Corps. They understand that the role of a VSPP is very different than a Peace Corps Volunteer or Peace Corps Response Volunteer.

Desired Qualifications
Education: Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in English, Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), Education, or similar

Experience:

• Virtual engagement and communication

• 2 years TEFL/TESOL to university students abroad or in the U.S.

Required Skills
Education: Bachelor's degree in any field

Experience: 1 year TEFL/TESOL to university students abroad or in the U.S.

Intercultural skills and motivation: Flexible, strong cross-cultural agility, high tolerance for ambiguity, able to work independently, resourceful, creative, and genuinely motivated and capable to serve virtually

The Department of English Philology and Methods of Teaching English aims to provide students with a comprehensive and high-quality education in English. The department's primary goals include developing students' linguistic competence, enabling them to attain proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English. This proficiency includes grammatical and phonetic accuracy, vocabulary expansion and cultural awareness.

Virtual Service Engagement and Tasks
The VSPP will engage in the following tasks, in collaboration with their Host Country Partners:

• Co-assess student needs, the current curriculum, and develop English Club session plans

• Co-develop and adapt teaching resources on American culture (sport, youth life, cuisine,
healthcare, mass media, social networks, art and culture, education, etc.)

• Co-teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and language skills to a group of 20 students
by using information on English-speaking countries, primarily the U.S.

• Co-analyze the results of conducted sessions and identify learning objectives and appropriate communicative activities

VSPP is expected to engage on the tasks listed above for an estimated 5–15 hours per week. This engagement is estimated to be 5 hours per week.

Online collaboration will generally occur between 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Ukraine time. Specific times
will be determined during orientation.

The host country counterpart will have access to email, phone, Zoom, WhatsApp, and Telegram for
regular communication and collaboration.

Per the Child Protection Code of Conduct, when engaging online with minors (0-18), two adults must be present.
